Elopement — the unsupervised departure of a memory care resident from a secured facility — is among the most serious adverse events in senior living. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 60% of individuals with dementia will wander at some point during their illness. The legal and regulatory consequences of an elopement incident are severe; the human consequences are potentially irreversible.
The facility's overnight nursing staff operated at a ratio that made continuous corridor monitoring impossible. Existing door alarms triggered on exit — too late for safe intervention in a resident who had already cleared the secured perimeter. The staff had identified a behavioral pattern they called 'exit-seeking': residents who would approach secured exits repeatedly during sundowning hours, hours before any alarm was possible. There was no system to detect and alert on that early behavior. There was only the alarm at the door — and the scramble that followed.

IntelliSee was connected to all corridor, common area, and exit approach cameras during a single afternoon. No resident was affected. No camera was repositioned. Fall detection was configured across all residential corridors and common areas; loitering detection on all exit approach corridors and secured door approaches; unauthorized access on external perimeter zones adjacent to resident areas.
Alert routing sent fall detections to the nursing station serving each camera zone and the charge nurse's device simultaneously. Loitering-at-exit alerts went to the same routing path — flagging exit-seeking behavior before the resident reached the door, giving staff the window to redirect naturally rather than in response to an alarm event.
East Wing. 3:41 AM. Tuesday.
At 3:41 AM, Camera 6 detected a resident who had been standing near the secured east wing exit approach for an extended period — a behavioral pattern that facility staff recognized as exit-seeking during sundowning. The loitering detection model classified the behavior and routed an alert to the overnight charge nurse in four seconds.
The charge nurse found the resident at the corridor approach — approximately 30 feet from the secured exit door — and redirected them toward the common area. No door alarm was triggered. No elopement attempt escalated. The resident was returned to their room and fell asleep within 20 minutes. Under the prior system, the next detection point would have been the door alarm — by which point the resident would have been at the exterior threshold in the middle of the night.

Fall detection alerts reached nursing staff within seconds of a floor event — compared to discovery times ranging from 20 to 47 minutes on overnight shifts under the prior model.

Fall Detection vs. Elopement Detection: Two Different AI Problems
Fall detection identifies a physical state: the transition from vertical to horizontal posture and sustained absence of upright motion. Elopement detection identifies a behavioral pattern: extended proximity to a secured exit during off-hours, a behavioral signature that precedes a departure attempt rather than documenting one.
These are architecturally different detection problems running on the same camera infrastructure. IntelliSee runs both simultaneously — fall detection on corridor cameras as a physical event classifier, loitering detection on exit approach cameras as a behavioral pattern classifier. For memory care environments, both are required. A fall detection-only system catches the event after it has occurred. A combined system catches the precursor behavior before the event escalates.
