EV Charging Stations Are a $7.2 Billion Security Blind Spot. AI Is the Fix.

The U.S. has over 85,000 EV charging stations and 230,000 ports, but most lack any real-time security. Copper cable theft, vandalism, and personal safety threats are surging. AI video analytics on existing cameras is the most practical solution for operators, retailers, and municipalities protecting this critical infrastructure.
Copper is trading above $4.50 per pound. A single EV charging cable contains roughly 20 pounds of the stuff. Do the math, then look at the empty parking lot where your nearest public charger sits, unattended, at 2 a.m.

That's the equation driving a nationwide wave of EV charger vandalism that shows no signs of slowing down. Electrify America saw more than 129 vandalism incidents at its 968 locations through just the first five months of 2024, already exceeding its full-year total from 2023. In Seattle alone, over 100 cable theft cases were reported in a single year. In Europe, one operator recorded more than 900 cable thefts at over 130 locations since early 2025.

The United States now has approximately 85,000 public charging stations and over 230,000 individual ports, with DC fast-charging infrastructure growing at more than 1,000 new stalls per month. The federal NEVI program is pouring billions into expansion. But here's the problem that almost nobody is talking about: the security strategy for this critical infrastructure is, in most cases, nonexistent.

EV Charging Security: A Problem Growing Faster Than the Infrastructure

EV charging stations combine several traits that make them attractive targets. They're expensive to install. They sit in exposed locations, often on the periphery of parking lots or behind commercial buildings. They operate around the clock without human attendants. And they contain valuable materials that can be stripped and sold in minutes.

The threats break down into three categories, and all of them are accelerating.

Cable Theft and Equipment Vandalism

This is the most visible problem. As PBS News reported, organized theft rings are targeting groups of chargers to strip cables in bulk. The copper inside each cable is worth enough to create a profitable operation, and the stations are rarely monitored in real time. A single vandalism incident can take a charger offline for weeks, costing operators thousands in lost revenue and repair expenses on top of the physical damage.

The U.S. Department of Energy has documented that vandalism and cable theft are among the leading causes of charger downtime at public and semi-public locations. Every charger that goes dark erodes public confidence in the EV infrastructure and delays adoption.

Personal Safety at Charging Locations

This one gets less media attention, but it may matter more in the long run. Unlike gas stations, which have attendants, overhead lighting, and foot traffic, many EV charging stations are isolated. Drivers have to stay near their vehicle for 20 to 45 minutes during a fast charge, often in poorly lit areas at odd hours.

Research from the FBI shows that the most common locations for violent crime in the U.S. include parking garages, parking lots, and streets. EV charging sites overlap heavily with these high-risk zones. Women drivers have reported feeling extremely vulnerable when charging alone at night, particularly at stations tucked into corners of retail parking lots or positioned along highway corridors with minimal foot traffic.

Organizations like Women Who Charge, a Denver-based advocacy group, have been pushing operators to adopt better lighting and monitoring standards. But lighting alone doesn't create proactive security. A well-lit location with no monitoring is still a location where something can happen with nobody watching.

Cybersecurity and Data Exposure

In late 2024, a threat actor exposed approximately 116,000 records of sensitive data from multiple global charging operators, including names, contact details, vehicle identification numbers, and precise geolocation data. Connected charging stations present an expanding attack surface that bridges physical and digital security concerns.

While cybersecurity solutions address the network layer, they do nothing about the physical reality: someone with bolt cutters can cause more immediate damage than most hackers.

Why Traditional Security Falls Short at Charging Locations

Most EV charging locations do have security cameras. Retail parking lots, corporate campuses, and municipal properties where chargers are installed typically already have CCTV infrastructure. The issue isn't a lack of cameras. It's that those cameras are doing nothing useful until after something has already happened.

Traditional CCTV records footage. That's it. If someone cuts a charging cable at 3 a.m., the camera dutifully captures the event. A security team reviews the footage hours or days later. The cable is already gone. The charger is already offline. The forensic value of the recording is limited because most cable thieves know enough to obscure their faces.

This is the same reactive model that the broader physical security industry has been stuck in for decades. Record first, respond later. It didn't work for retail theft. It didn't work for parking lot crime. And it's not going to work for protecting a national charging network that's growing by a thousand stations a month.

How AI Video Analytics Changes the Equation

AI-powered video analytics transforms existing security cameras from passive recorders into active detection systems. Instead of waiting for a human to review footage, computer vision algorithms analyze video feeds in real time and trigger alerts the moment suspicious behavior is detected.

For EV charging stations specifically, this means several capabilities that directly address the threat landscape.

Real-Time Loitering and Tampering Detection

AI loitering detection identifies when someone is spending an unusual amount of time near charging equipment without a vehicle plugged in. A legitimate user pulls up, connects their car, and waits inside the vehicle or nearby. Someone casing a charger for cable theft behaves differently: lingering near the equipment, approaching multiple stations, returning to a vehicle and coming back. AI can distinguish between these behavioral patterns and send an alert before any damage occurs.

After-Hours Activity Monitoring

Charging station vandalism overwhelmingly happens during off-peak hours. AI analytics can establish normal usage patterns for a charging location and flag activity that deviates from the baseline. A vehicle pulling up at 2 a.m. to charge is normal. Three people approaching chargers on foot without vehicles at 2 a.m. is not. This kind of contextual analysis is impossible with traditional motion detection, which triggers on everything and quickly becomes background noise.

Vehicle and Person Tracking

Vehicle detection and person tracking allow security teams to follow the sequence of events across a charging site. If a vehicle stages near a bank of chargers at an unusual angle or a person moves between multiple stations in a pattern consistent with pre-attack reconnaissance, the system flags it. This is the kind of behavioral analysis that a human monitoring dozens of feeds would miss every time.

Integration with Existing Infrastructure

Critically, AI video analytics doesn't require new cameras. Most retail, commercial, and municipal properties where chargers are deployed already have camera infrastructure in place. AI platforms layer onto existing cameras, which means the deployment cost and timeline to protect charging stations is a fraction of what a full security system overhaul would require. For operators and site hosts, this is the difference between a budget conversation that goes nowhere and a solution that can be implemented in weeks.

Who Needs to Pay Attention

The EV charging security problem touches multiple stakeholders, and the responsibility doesn't fall neatly on any one group.

Charging network operators like Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, and Tesla bear the direct cost of vandalism and downtime. Some are already investing in hardware solutions like ChargePoint's cut-resistant cables and built-in tamper alarms. But hardware alone is a defensive measure. AI analytics adds the proactive detection layer that hardware can't provide.

Retail and commercial property owners who host chargers on their premises face liability and reputation risks. A theft or personal safety incident at a charging station in your parking lot is your problem too, regardless of who owns the charger. The cameras are already there. Making them intelligent is the low-hanging fruit.

Municipalities and transit agencies deploying chargers in public spaces with NEVI funding need to account for long-term security costs. Federal dollars cover installation, but vandalism and repair expenses come out of local budgets. AI-powered security for public infrastructure isn't a luxury. It's the cost of keeping that infrastructure operational.

Fleet operators with dedicated charging depots face concentrated risk. A targeted attack on a fleet charging site can ground an entire operation. AI monitoring of depot perimeters and charging areas provides the early warning that fleet managers need.

The Bigger Picture: Protecting Critical Infrastructure

The EV transition is a matter of national policy. Billions of federal and private dollars are flowing into building out the charging network. But infrastructure that can be disabled with a pair of bolt cutters and five minutes of unmonitored time isn't resilient infrastructure.

The physical security industry is undergoing the same transformation that the EV sector is experiencing. Passive systems are giving way to proactive, AI-driven detection. The security guard shortage means we can't staff our way out of this problem. And the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure means the window to get ahead of the security challenge is closing.

The good news: the cameras are already there. The technology to make them intelligent exists right now. What's missing is the recognition that EV charging security deserves the same level of strategic thinking that goes into the charging hardware itself.

Because a charger that's been vandalized doesn't charge anything. And a driver who doesn't feel safe at a charging station will think twice about buying an EV in the first place.

That's not a security problem. That's an infrastructure problem. And AI video analytics is the most practical path to solving it.
