A wave of state legislation is forcing school districts to adopt AI-powered weapons detection systems. Georgia's House Bill 1023 established one of the most direct mandates in the country, requiring public schools to implement weapons detection technology. At least a dozen other states are considering similar measures in 2026. The federal School Violence Prevention Act (H.R.3968) has introduced new grant categories specifically for gun violence prevention technology. And on March 20, the White House released its National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, signaling that the federal government views AI as central to community safety infrastructure going forward.
The policy momentum is real. The problem is what districts are buying.
The Walk-Through Detection Problem
The dominant approach in school AI weapons detection right now is walk-through scanning: students file past AI-enhanced portals that attempt to identify concealed weapons in bags and on their bodies as they enter the building. Evolv Technology and Omnilert are the most visible names in this category.
The track record is troubling.
At Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 22, 2025, a student carried a 9mm pistol past an active Omnilert AI weapons detection system. The gun was concealed. The system did not detect it. The student killed one classmate and then himself. In Utica, New York, a student brought a hunting knife through Evolv's AI-enhanced entry scanners in a backpack. The student later stabbed a classmate. The victim's family sued the city, the school district, and Evolv.
Districts using walk-through AI detection systems have reported persistent false alarms on items including spiral-bound notebooks, musical instrument cases, Chromebooks, and water bottles. Some schools now instruct students to hold frequently flagged items above their heads as they pass through. The Federal Trade Commission investigated Evolv in 2024 over allegations that the company had deceptively advertised its ability to reliably detect weapons.
Education Week reported on April 1, 2026, that while states are providing initial funding to purchase these systems, legislators are failing to account for the ongoing costs of software contracts, equipment upkeep, and the staff required to monitor their use. Kenneth Trump, an Ohio-based school security consultant, warned that many of these mandates are creating unfunded obligations with no mechanism for sustained implementation.
The fundamental limitation is architectural. Walk-through systems protect a single point of entry. They cannot detect a weapon that enters through a side door, a window, or a secondary entrance propped open by a student. They do not function once a person is inside the building. They cannot identify a weapon drawn from a locker, a vehicle in the parking lot, or a bag that was never screened.
Checkpoint security has the same failure mode every time: it assumes the attacker will cooperate with the security protocol.

The result is a growing disconnect between what legislatures are mandating, what districts are purchasing, and what actually closes the detection gap once a person is past the front entrance.
What the Data Shows
There were 233 school shooting incidents documented in the United States in 2025, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. Across the most prominent of those incidents, a pattern repeats: the weapon was visible on an existing security camera before it was used. The footage was reviewed after the incident, not during it.
Schools do not have a camera shortage. They have a monitoring gap. The cameras are already installed. They are already recording. What they are not doing is watching, interpreting, and alerting in real time.

State legislators writing AI weapons detection mandates have an opportunity to get the language right. Mandates that define the requirement as "continuous, facility-wide threat detection on existing surveillance infrastructure" open the door to camera-based AI platforms that provide the coverage districts actually need.
The White House AI Framework calls for federal standards that preempt conflicting state patchworks. For physical security in schools, that standard should reflect what the technology can actually deliver: detection that works everywhere a camera can see, not just where a student agrees to walk through a scanner.
