Alyssa’s Law is a powerful piece of school safety legislation named after 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff, one of 17 lives lost in the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The result was Alyssa’s Law, which mandates the implementation of silent panic alarm systems in public schools. These systems link directly to law enforcement, bypassing slower 911 calls and ensuring immediate action. As the campaign behind the law puts it: “Because time equals life.”

Where It Started, and Where It’s Going

Alyssa’s Law was first passed in New Jersey in 2019, quickly gaining bipartisan support. Since then, momentum has grown:

As of 2025, eight states, New Jersey, Florida, New York, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Oklahoma, and most recently, Georgia, have enacted their versions of Alyssa’s Law.

Legislation is currently pending in several other states, and discussions of a federal mandate are well underway.
